WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Donald Trump’s big, beautiful bill is teed up for a vote in the House, after it barely passed out of the Senate and then out of the House rules committee, but the bill in its current form is expected to face pushback.
For 12 hours, the House rules committee debated the lengthy legislation, and some Republicans already expressed their issue with the bill.
“They went a little further than many of us would have preferred, but we have the product now,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).
House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested the vote could take place as early as Wednesday, which doesn’t give much time for lawmakers to go through all the changes.
The House rules committee was the final step before going to the House floor. It got no’s from all Democrats and only two Republicans, South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman and Texas Congressman Chip Roy sighting issue with the Senate’s changes.
“I will vote against it here and I’ll vote against it on the floor until we get it right,” said Norman.
Republican supporters of the Senate bill have highlighted its roughly $4 trillion in tax cuts, new funding for border security, and key Trump campaign promises.
House Democrats are calling this a worse version of the House bill, as it would slash programs like Medicaid and SNAP.
“Mothers are coming up to me crying in elevators. Medicaid is the largest payer of healthcare for so many people. This bill is going to hurt them,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.).
Johnson also mentioned that some members were having trouble returning to Washington, D.C., due to cancellations and delays caused by the weather.
