Black Cat Ice Cream closes Drake Neighborhood location

DES MOINES, Iowa — Black Cat Ice Cream announced it has closed its Des Moines location.

Black Cat Ice Cream opened its doors at 2511 Cottage Grove Avenue four years ago and instantly became a hotspot — winning best ice cream shop in Des Moines and a slew of other awards.

On Monday evening, the owners of Black Cat Ice Cream announced in a post on Facebook that they have closed the Drake Neighborhood location due to safety concerns related to the historic building and the potential risk it poses to employees and customers. The announcement reads in part:

“We are incredibly grateful for our 4 years at Cottage Grove where we were named best ice cream shop in Des Moines, best ice cream shop in the state of Iowa, and won nearly a dozen awards for ice cream making. Being a part of the Drake community in a historic building was an honor and a dream come true. We are very thankful to everyone who has visited us over the years.”

The Facebook post states that a new location in Des Moines is in the works, and that they hope to open in the fall. In the meantime, Black Cat Ice Cream fans can still visit the Valley Junction location in West Des Moines Tuesday through Sunday.
