MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A central Iowa tattoo artist already facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting two women at a Clive tattoo shop is facing the same charge in connection with an alleged assault in Marshalltown.
Mark Cates, 27, is charged with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse for an incident that happened in November of 2024, according to the Marshalltown Police Department. A criminal complaint filed in the case said the incident happened on November 8, 2024, at 19 S Center Street in Marshalltown. That is the address listed for Ink Factory Tattoo Studios.
The investigation began on June 10th, police said, after an adult woman reported she’d been assaulted by Cates.
Police said Cates turned himself in on the charge on Monday.
Cates was arrested in May on two counts of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse for incidents that happened in Clive at the tattoo shop where he worked. Two victims came forward to police, saying Cates had assaulted them during tattoo appointments.
The investigation remains active, and police are asking anyone with information about the incidents to contact them at 641-754-5729. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Marshall County Crime Stoppers at 641-753-1234.
