Some Des Moines roads closed due to flooding Wednesday morning

DES MOINES, Iowa — Rain poured down on the Des Moines metro early Wednesday morning, causing localized street flooding in some areas. Multiple roads are temporarily closed because of the flooding.

The Des Moines Police Department said all or parts of the following roads were experiencing flooding as of around 7:10 a.m.:

  • 1900 blk E. Euclid Ave
  • 3200 blk Dean Ave
  • 1900 blk E. University Ave
  • 3300 blk MLK, Jr Parkway
  • 6100 blk Army Post Road

Drivers are advised to avoid the affected areas, as standing water is present in some locations. It’s unsafe to drive or walk through flooded areas as the current below the surface could be strong and sweep you away. Some hazards could be hidden by the floodwaters, such as collapsed roadways or missing manhole covers.

DMPD is cautioning people not to ignore barricades on the roads that have been placed for safety.

How long the road closures will last depends on how quickly the water recedes and whether any damage to roadways occurred from the flooding.
