Iowa DNR says swimming not advised at nine state beaches

IOWA — While many will want to head to the beach this weekend to beat the extreme heat, there are several state beaches that officials are urging Iowans to avoid.

On Friday, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced that nine state beaches exceeded the state’s thresholds for E. coli. The beaches include:

  • Backbone Beach in Delaware County
  • Beed’s Lake Beach in Franklin County
  • Black Hawk Beach in Sac County
  • Bobwhite State Park in Wayne County
  • Emerson Bay Beach in Dickinson County
  • Lewis and Clark State Park – Blue Lake Beach in Monona County
  • Lower Pine Lake Beach in Hardin County
  • Nine Eagles Beach in Decatur County
  • North Twin Lake West Beach in Calhoun County

A swimming not advised warning is now in place for the beaches until E. coli levels drop below the state’s allowable threshold.
