DES MOINES, Iowa — At least one person was injured in a fire at an apartment building near Merle Hay Mall Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 3710 57th Street around 6:12 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke coming from an apartment building. The Des Moines Fire Department tells WHO 13 that one person suffered burns on approximately 40% of their body and has been transported to a Des Moines hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released.

Firefighters remain on the scene as of 6:45 a.m. to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and the building is clear.
