DES MOINES, Iowa — We’ve warmed today with plenty of sunshine, though it’s been filtered by wildfire smoke that looks to stick around through the weekend. Your weather timeline takes you into Sunday:

Lows tonight will be warmer than nights past, setting us up for more warming on Saturday.

As mentioned above, smoke from fires (mainly in Saskatchewan) looks to hang around in the upper atmosphere. At this point it doesn’t appear that much of it will make it down to the surface with the exception of the timeframe from Saturday evening into Sunday morning. In addition to cool weather the past couple of weeks, our dewpoints have stayed fairly low. That changes late Sunday into Tuesday, and this increased moisture will set us up for thunderstorm chances.

We do see a slight chance for a stronger storm in southern Iowa on Tuesday, as shows in Colorado State’s graphics below, but better chances will be in place south of our state. The extended outlook slideshow below steps you through timing for precipitation Tuesday and Thursday.

Highs for the next 6 days are above, and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts below:

Our chances for heavier rainfall, and maybe stronger storms, seem to increase toward the middle of June as shown in the extended graphics below. We’ll keep you updated!
