Principal Charity Classic returns to Wakonda Club this week

DES MOINES, Iowa – Golf pros, amateurs, and spectators are filing into the Wakonda Club on the south side of Des Moines for the Principal Charity Classic this week.

The Pro-Am tournament takes place at Wakonda Club on Wednesday and Thursday. This event gives amateurs the opportunity to play with pros. The professionals also have the chance to get more familiar with the course.

On the 17th hole, professionals and amateurs who get a hole-in-one will win a golfing trip of their choice.

The professional tournament happens Friday and continues into the weekend. Tickets are still available and start at $25. Kids get in free, and a junior sports experience on Saturday will allow kids to interact with PGA pros.

It’s fitting that kids get in free — the entire event supports charities focused on helping children. That includes Blank Children’s Hospital, MercyOne Children’s Hospital, Variety-Iowa, and United Way of Central Iowa. Around $62 million has been raised since Principal became part of the tournament in 2007.
