DES MOINES, Iowa — A fire that claimed the lives of three people is under investigation on Des Moines’ southside.
A news release from the Des Moines Police Department said that a little after 3:00 a.m. Wednesday, police officers and firefighters from the Des Moines Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a home on fire in the 6700 block of Three Lakes Parkway.
When first responders arrived at the home, they found it fully engulfed in flame. Capt. Stacia Swanson of the Des Moines Fire Department told WHO 13 eight people were living in the home, and many were able to get out on their own.
A neighbor, Tricia, who was the first to call 911 said the fire spread quickly. She told WHO 13’s Teodora Mitov that she saw one resident jump from the second floor to escape the flames.
Despite rescue efforts, police said three people died at the scene.
One person was transported to the hospital and is receiving medical care. Their condition has not been released.
DMPD says fire investigators are on scene to determine the cause of the fire. Police and fire crews are expected to be on scene for a while as the investigation continues.
More information is expected to be released later.
