CUMMING, Iowa — The town of Cumming is getting a longer main street.
Actually, the road is called N. 44th Street. It now crosses G-14, or Cumming Road, and the road is continued where there was not a road before. Diligent Development is extending the road, and putting in new buildings to give that downtown feeling.
“When I think of small towns in Iowa, like Adel, Decorah, Manchester, Grinnell, and Winterset, that they all have kind of this, this part of the town this town center or like Main Street,” said Tim Portzen, of Diligent Development. “Right, so here in Cumming south of 44th at the intersection of 44th and then Cumming Avenue is kind of their little miniature historic downtown, so we’ve essentially extended that to the south as though there are multiple blocks of this kind of historic main street.”
The company is also constructing a building on the east side of the new downtown, for Peoples Company. That is expected to have some 70 employees located in Cumming at their new office.
The Cumming mayor is glad that Diligent Development is investing in the community.
“The town of Cumming has welcomed Diligent, we need to grow a little bit to protect ourselves from other cities and encroaching on our boundaries,” said Mayor Brent Highfill. “The people that are moving into town are young families or older people who are retired and wanted a little bit quieter life, or chasing grandkids, it’s been a great addition to our community.”
