FRANKLIN COUNTY, Kansas — An Iowa man was killed in a head-on crash in Kansas over the weekend.

At around 5:43 p.m. on Sunday the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to a report of a head-on crash on US 169 northeast of Virginia Road in rural Franklin County. According to a crash report, a 2016 GMC Yukon XL was traveling southbound on US 169 when the driver attempted to pass a vehicle and entered the northbound lanes. A 2016 Subaru Legacy was traveling northbound at the time. The drivers of the vehicles both attempted to swerve away from each other, but crashed head-on in the northbound shoulder, the report states.

According to the report, eight people died from their injuries at the crash scene, including a man from Iowa.

Alexander Ernst, 37, from Ames was driving the Subaru at the time of the crash. He, along with his three passengers, identified as 76-year-old John Elliott, 33-year-old Madalyn Elliott, and 69-year-old Norleen Elliott, all from Missouri died in the crash.

The driver of the GMC, 33-year-old Jaimon Gilstrap of Oklahoma, and three of his four passengers died from their injuries at the scene. The passengers were identified as two 14-year-old males and 41-year-old Wayne Walls, all from Oklahoma. A fourth passenger, identified as a 15-year-old male, was injured and transported to a hospital.

No additional information was released.
