DES MOINES, Iowa — Clouds that have hung with us for most of Saturday should diminish slowly as we head towards sunset. Your weather timeline takes us into a beautiful Sunday.

Lows will again be fairly chilly Saturday night, but with more sunshine on Sunday, a warming trend will begin that takes us into the week.

Today’s clouds were a symptom of what is called an omega block weather pattern. This configuration in the upper winds resembles the Greek letter Ω, with an area of high pressure in the center flanked by a low on either side. The low on the east is what gave us our pesky clouds Saturday. These patterns are slow to break.

We will see enough of a change on Wednesday to give us more clouds and slight shower chances. We will also see some cloud cover in Thursday’s forecast, but things improve by next weekend again.

As seen in the European model’s output below, any amounts received on Wednesday will be light. Highs for the next six days follow.

Your WHO 13 7-day forecasts and extended forecasts follow. In general, things stay warm and dry for a bit.

Below, a look at the storm energy forecast from the European model’s 50 ensemble models, which shows us a better chance to see increased fuel for storms in the atmosphere over Iowa starting May 16th.

The GFS model’s forecast for the likelihood for rotating storms in our area also increases on the 16th and the 19th. We’ll keep you updated!
