When scattered showers and storms will spread across central Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa – After some overnight rain, additional showers and storms will impact central Iowa over the next couple of days.

Several locations saw a decent amount of rain overnight. Here’s a list of 24-hour totals from 7 AM Wednesday to 7 AM Thursday:

  • Atlantic: 0.30″
  • Pella: 0.30″
  • Centerville: 0.18″
  • Osceola: 0.17″
  • Grinnell: 0.16″
  • Lamoni: 0.16″
  • Ottumwa: 0.15″
  • Knoxville: 0.15″
  • Creston: 0.13″
  • Chariton: 0.07″
  • Audubon: 0.06″
  • Algona: 0.05″
  • Hampton: 0.04″
  • Newton: 0.04″
  • Oskaloosa: 0.02″
  • Clarion: 0.02″
  • Ames: 0.01″
  • Perry: 0.01″
  • Marshalltown: 0.01″
  • Iowa Falls: 0.01″
  • Fort Dodge: 0.01″

Showers will persist on and off through Thursday morning. Some thunderstorms could develop by the mid to late afternoon hours. Severe weather is not expected. Most of the rain should wrap up close to sunset. The overnight will be mostly dry with the chance for a few additional showers.

Chances for showers return on Friday. They will still be fairly scattered with the potential for more widespread rain in southern Iowa during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Dry conditions arrive by the weekend.

By Friday night, a quarter to half an inch of rain will be possible across the state. Totals will be higher where thunderstorms develop. This setup will give most of the state a fairly even chance at seeing this amount of rain. A few spots could see more than half an inch.

Beautiful conditions will arrive this weekend with sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. The 70s are on track to stay for most of next week, with more rain and unsettled weather possible by the middle of the week.
