DES MOINES, Iowa — Truman’s KC Pizza Tavern filled with music Sunday as it dedicated its courtyard space to an Iowan who spent their life promoting local musicians.
Located at 400 Southeast 6th Street in Des Moines, Truman’s KC Pizza Tavern has become a hub for the local community to enjoy live and local music. To kick off the 2025 live music session, the green space was dedicated to Wendy Hull.
Hull had a huge impact on the Iowa music community; her work includes founding Wednesday’s Notes, a non-profit Facebook group that spotlights and supports local musicians. The page has attracted more than 5,500 members, with members that play in venues across the state.
Between 2010 and 2015 attended more than 900 local performances. Later in 2015 she would be named Fan of the Year by the Des Moines Music Coalition. In 2024 Hull was inducted into the Iowa Hall of Fame for her contributions to Iowa’s live music culture.
Hull died unexpectedly in 2023, since then the community has kept her work alive. Family, friends, and members of the local music scene came out to celebrate her legacy.
“I can’t on what my sister has done for this community, one person did that and didn’t realize till she was gone, it takes a village to keep this thing going,” said Ginger Lawshe, Wendy’s sister.
“It really is an honor to really be able to have a formal space that we can come out and listen to live music, think about Wendy, and give back to the community,” said Benton Taylor, member of Wednesday’s Notes.
Live music was featured throughout the evening with one of Hull’s favorite bands, Decoy Trio, christening the area as the first band to play live music in the space.
