DES MOINES, Iowa — A new park going up in the Highland Park neighborhood this year combines fun and function.
Originally known as the East 9th Street Basin Park, the park has been renamed the Kathryn Kreig Park. Kreig worked with the City of Des Moines for more than 40 years. During her time she established Beggar’s Night and ran several camps and programs.
The park is located at 3825 East 9th Street and is split into two parts, a basin area and a park section. City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation estimates more than 2,900 people will make use of the park’s amenities.
The basin was put in as part of a stormwater improvement system to help manage pooling water in the area. Construction on the basin is wrapping up now, with focus switching to the park.
Amenities will include a full-sized basketball court, which can be adapted for Futsal use. Plans also include a 1/4-mile walking loop, playground equipment, and an open-air shelter. Signage placed throughout the park will delve into Kreig’s work and explain the basin system.
One resident says the park is a welcome addition to the changing neighborhood.
“When we first moved in, it was mainly the older generations. All their kids had grown and moved away, and then now the youngers are all moving in, which is nice to see,” said Kenda Moore. “I think it’ll be good for the neighborhood. There’s really nothing else like this over here for the kids to go enjoy.”
Portions of the walking loop are complete and open to the public. Construction is underway and set to finish in the fall.
