AMES, Iowa — The Ames Community School District’s School Board voted unanimously to join the Little Hawkeye Athletic Conference at its Monday, April 21 board meeting.
Lyle Fedders, the activities director for Ames High School, said that moving to the Little Hawkeye Conference will make for better competition for students.
“We look at competitiveness at the varsity level, but also at the lower levels. And one of the big decisions that also kind of weighed on us with this one was the middle school offerings at the Little Hawkeye schools. Our current member schools have, they are very competitive to what we also offer in terms of our middle school offerings. So, from middle school all the way to high school, the Little Hawkeye and Ames, there was a lot of similarities,” Fedders said.
Ames High School’s Girls’ Varsity Soccer team had the chance to test new conference competition at a Thursday evening game against Norwalk.
Brad Benson, an Ames Community School District parent, said that he is excited for the new competition the Little Hawkeye Conference will bring.
“I think it’s a good thing for Ames. Better competition than what we’re in soccer wise,” Benson said.
Adam Wood, a Norwalk Community School District parent, said he is looking forward to have another school in Norwalk’s athletic conference.
“We’ve been pretty competitive for the most part, but we’ve got some high level kids here in this district, so it’s kind of nice to be able to see some larger teams come in. And tonight we’re playing Ames. You know, they’re bigger than Norwalk and we’re hand in hand on our own right at the moment. So, yeah, we’re looking forward to having the new schools join,” Wood said.
Norwalk beat Ames 3-1.
