Spring cleaning begins, first 2025 DSM Mega Scrub held

DES MOINES, Iowa — Spring brings spring cleaning, and the City of Des Moines is giving residents a helping hand getting rid of unwanted items.

The City of Des Moines hosts monthly scrubs beginning in the spring and throughout the fall, allowing residents to drop off materials without the extra work and cost.

“It’s a big spring-cleaning sort of event, and it’s great because instead of normally where you have to get like the paper, the pink slips, to have large objects picked up at your house, if you can get it here, they’ll probably take it,” said Marshall James, President of North of Grand Neighborhood Association.

Attendees must first prove their Des Moines residency with a photo ID or current utility bill. Then they are free to drop off trash, appliances, yard debris, and more. View a full list here.

Des Moines Mega Scrubs events now offer disposal of household hazardous waste materials. Early arrival is advised as capacity for hazardous materials is limited and quickly fills up.

“We’ve got a lot of recycling for electronic books, large appliances, and also hazardous materials here. I am very concerned about the environment and about our waste, and so I appreciate that there’s an opportunity here for a bunch of items that can be recycled or can be properly disposed of to not just go right into the landfill,” said James.

The next Des Moines Mega Scrub event is being held from 7 a.m. to noon on May 17 at Polk County River Place, 2309 Euclid Avenue.
