DES MOINES, Iowa — Strong storms that moved through Iowa Thursday night into Friday morning caused widespread damage in the town of Storm Lake.
The Storm Lake Police Department shared photos of some of the damage on its Facebook page and detailed some of the issues facing residents — including a power outage to the entire city.
SLPD said there are power lines down, fallen trees, and debris blocking many roads throughout the town. Emergency crews are working to assess the damage and clear the major routes, while still providing help to residents.
The hazardous conditions have SLPD offering safety warnings:
- Stay away from downed power lines — always assume they are live and dangerous.
- Avoid unnecessary travel around town. No place has power or is open, so stay home.
- Blocked roads and hidden hazards make driving extremely dangerous.
- Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly or those who may need extra assistance.
- Report emergencies or hazardous situations to 911. For non-emergencies, please use our non-emergency line (712) 732-8010.
The department is asking for patience as they work with local utility and public works crews to restore services.
