4 injured, 2 critically in head-on crash in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — A head-on crash in Des Moines Wednesday night injured four people, and two of them remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Emergency responders were called to the 1600 block of Hartford Avenue around 9:05 Tuesday night to respond to a head-on crash between a Pontiac G6 and a Dodge Ram pickup, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department.

A preliminary investigation reveals the car was traveling eastbound on Hartford Avenue when it crossed into the westbound lane and collided with the pickup.

The driver and a passenger in the car, both adult males, suffered life-threatening injuries and remain hospitalized. Another passenger in the car, an adult female, and the driver of the pickup, an adult male, were also transported to the hospital with injuries but are expected to survive.

The identities of the people involved in the crash have not been released.

Sgt. Parizek said excessive speed and alcohol impairment are potential contributing factors in the crash.

A portion of Hartford Avenue was shut down while the crash scene was investigated and cleared.

The DMPD Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate.
