DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa — The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who was shot and killed by law enforcement early Tuesday morning.
At around 1:34 a.m. the sheriff’s office said a deputy performed a traffic stop on a vehicle for excessive speeding on Interstate 80 west of De Soto. The sheriff’s office said during the traffic stop the driver, identified as Vonderrick Rayford, 51, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin got out of the vehicle and fired a weapon at the deputy.
After Rayford opened fire, multiple law enforcement agencies were called in to assist, and when they arrived at the scene the sheriff’s office said Rayford began firing his weapon at them. In response, multiple officers and deputies returned fire, striking Rayford and killing him.
According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation so far has found that the vehicle Rayford was driving and the firearm he used during the shooting were stolen. Rayford also had a warrant for his arrest in Wisconsin, the sheriff’s office said.
The officers and deputies involved remain on administrative leave while the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation continues investigating the officer-involved shooting.
