There have been rare instances where a single location has set both a record high and a record low temperature on the same day. This unusual weather phenomenon typically occurs due to dramatic and rapid shifts in weather patterns, often with the passage of a strong cold front. Here’s what we were able to find:
Springfield, Missouri, November 11, 1911: During an event known as the “Great Blue Norther,” Springfield experienced a record high of 80° in the afternoon, followed by a plunge to a record low of 13°F by midnight. This extreme swing was caused by a powerful arctic cold front moving through the region, dropping temperatures rapidly after an unseasonably warm start.
Victoria, Texas, August 30, 2023: This location tied its record high and record low for that specific date in a remarkable same-day event. Victoria reached its hottest August 30th temperature of 105° on record during the day and then dropped to its coldest August 30th temperature of 66° by night.
These cases are exceptional and often tied to specific meteorological conditions, like intense frontal passages or unusual diurnal fluctuations, particularly in regions prone to large temperature variations.
