6-year-old boy confirmed dead in Altoona drowning

ALTOONA, Iowa — A 6-year-old boy has died after first responders pulled him from a pond Tuesday afternoon in Altoona.

Police were called to Prairie Heritage Pond near Hy-Vee at 108 8th Street SW around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Searchers spent about 45 minutes combing through the area before finding some of the child’s belongings near the pond.

The discovery prompted police to call for a water rescue. First responders located the boy and immediately began CPR.

The boy was transported to Blank Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The child had autism, and his parents were the ones to call him in missing.
