DES MOINES, Iowa — After the announcement of who the new Des Moines Police Department Chief of Police would be, Des Moines City Council members locked in the selection by a vote in a special session.
The council voted 7-0 to approve the recommendation by City Manager Scott Sanders. The search began in the spring of 2024 after current Police Chief Dana Wingert announced his retirement.
Sanders had a search process that started with eight qualified candidates, narrowing it down to two finalists and on Wednesday announcing that Major Michael McTaggart would take over after Wingert’s retirement on Nov. 5.
McTaggart is a 25 year veteran of the police department, living in Des Moines for the same time period. Mayor Connie Boesen, City Manager Scott Sanders spoke highly of Chief Wingert in his nearly a decade of serving the community.
