DES MOINES, Iowa — It’s a gameday for the Des Moines Menace, unlike any other – with a roster of Major League Soccer legends lacing up their boots and headed to Valley Stadium.
Tuesday night, we caught up with this “special edition” of the Menace in their final training session. Among the players they’ve recruited are former U.S. men’s national team players Dax McCarty, Sasha Kljestan, and Sporting KC Hall of Famer Benny Feilhaber.
“I think the one thing that you can expect is we’re excited to be here. We’re excited to be in front of our fans. We want to win, right? We’re not here to, just play with our old teammates and friends. We’re here to win. And so, we’re going to go out there and compete and try and bring a dub to this crowd,” said Feilhaber.
“The chance for so many legends of the game and American soccer to come out here to Iowa to play a game. Yeah, it’s all about giving back. We didn’t start this … to make a big statement about the Open Cup or anything in general,” said Kljestan. “We did it because we wanted to play a game together with something on the line.”
McCarty said, “I still feel pretty good, to be honest. So my body has always been in pretty good shape. I’ve always been a pretty fit guy, so I just had to get out and run around a little bit just to break a sweat. And, I felt like I could give it a go.”
The Menace take on Union Omaha at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. You can get tickets here.
