FORT DODGE, Iowa — Many think of corn and farming when they picture Iowa, but the state’s waterways are just as vital. A new place in Webster County hopes to help people across Iowa remember that.
The Matt Cosgrove River’s Edge Discovery Center in Fort Dodge opened last July. The center is home to colorful and interactive exhibits that aim to teach Iowans about the importance of waterways and the wildlife found along them. Sections of the River’s Edge Discovery Center are also dedicated to some of Fort Dodge’s history, like Lazy Ike fishing lures.
Since opening, the Discovery Center has attracted thousands of visitors of all ages. Webster County Conservation Director Matt Cosgrove hopes this center along the river will remind people of Fort Dodge’s roots. This summer will see an expansion of the River Discovery Center, linking it to area trails and including an outdoor area with recreation along the river.
Cosgrove also notes how important Iowa’s natural resources are, both for residents and for attracting new businesses to the state.
It’s been a nearly 30-year effort to make the River’s Edge Discovery Center a reality. Cosgrove has played a pivotal role in that effort through his time in public service. For those efforts, Cosgrove was surprised to see his name on the side of the building, with its official name being the Matt Cosgrove River’s Edge Discovery Center.
The River’s Edge Discovery Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
