Des Moines latest city to permanently move night of trick-or-treating

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines residents will no longer be trick-or-treating on Beggar’s Night.

The Des Moines City Council on Monday will approve moving trick-or-treating to the night of Halloween. For decades, residents have celebrated the spooky holiday on Beggar’s Night, the night before Halloween.

In 2024 Des Moines residents went trick-or-treating on Halloween night for the first time in over 80 years after severe weather postponed the regularly scheduled Beggar’s Night.

The move comes after the city sent out a survey to residents asking for their opinion on the best night to go trick-or-treating. According to city documents, the majority of residents said in the survey that they want to celebrate on Halloween night.

Multiple other metro cities, like Urbandale and Clive, have moved trick-or-treating to Halloween night. City documents say moving Des Moines’ night of trick-or-treating to Halloween will hopefully lesson the confusion and inconsistency around when trick-or-treating will take place for those in metro communities.

The change begins this year in Des Moines with trick-or-treating scheduled for Friday, October 31.
