FORT DODGE, Iowa — A death investigation is underway in Fort Dodge after a man was found unresponsive on the sidewalk in front of a burning building.
The Fort Dodge Police Department said in a news release that its officers responded to 1035 1st Ave. S. after a call came in around 12:18 a.m. Wednesday about a male lying on the sidewalk, who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound.
The Fort Dodge Fire Department provided medical aid but the male was pronounced dead by the Webster County Medical Examiner.
As officers investigated, they noticed smoke coming from an upstairs apartment of the building at 1035 1st. Ave. S. They found an active fire inside third-floor apartment 3W. Firefighters were able to take control of the fire quickly.
The FDPD said it’s believed the male who died fell from the third-story window of the apartment where the fire was located.
The man’s name is not being released at this time so authorities have the chance to notify the next of kin.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
