DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been jailed in connection with a Prospect Park neighborhood shooting Monday night that seriously injured a woman, police say.
Demonie Smith, 18, is being held in the Polk County Jail on charges of attempted murder and going armed with intent.
Des Moines Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said Smith used an AR-15 rifle to shoot a woman in the 2600 block of Boston Avenue a little after 10:30 p.m. Demonie and the victim were known to each other.
Police were initially called to the area on a report of gunfire. While officers were responding, they learned a woman suffering gunshot wounds had driven herself to Broadlawns Medical Center. Sgt. Parizek said the victim was hit three times and the vehicle she drove herself to the hospital in had been hit seven times.
Investigators found shell casings in the roadway at Boston Avenue.
As part of the investigation, a search warrant was executed in a South Central Des Moines neighborhood where several firearms were seized. Investigators identified Demonie as a suspect in the shooting and he was arrested.
The 32-year-old victim remains hospitalized.
The investigation into the shooting continues.
