Iowans head outdoors to enjoy sunny 70-degree weather

INDIANOLA, Iowa — People across Iowa were looking to get outside Monday afternoon. With the thermometer going into the upper 70s, there was every reason you could think of to get outside and enjoy the day.

At Deer Run Golf Course, it was opening day.

“We’ve been trying to get open, we were trying to open this last weekend but the blizzard that came out of nowhere kind of waited, so we couldn’t open so we had to delay it just a few days,” said Sophia George, Clubhouse Manager at Deer Run. “I give all credit to the weather guys for letting us know it was gonna be 70 degrees today so we’re just happy that it can be 70 degrees in March.”

Some golfers told us they had to first locate where they left their golf clubs, it had been that long for some since they swung a club.

“I enjoyed it, I mean it was a little, little different than middle of the summer because it’s the first week of golf,” said Jim Stuber, an avid golfer. “It was a little soggy because of the snow and the rain and the greens are a little bit slow because it’s not mowed yet but it was, it was fun.”

“I mean it’s Iowa weather so I mean it’s, it’s unpredictable but we enjoy it,” said Alex Benhart, of Indianola. “This is like the best type of weather, sunny and 70 so you can’t complain for your first time out of the year we’re not looking to break any course records.”

“I think it’s been amazing. It’s amazing to feel that you can go outside without having to really prepare too much and enjoy yourself,” said Bob Best, who came to Summerset State Park with wife Anita, to enjoy the day. “It’s been wonderful. We were actually in a gym on a treadmill and we thought ‘what are we doing?’ And so we came out here. This is one of our favorite places to walk.”

People came to this state park for all kinds of activities including kayaking and walking the dog.

“We’ve got a new dog, my wife and she’s not here,” said Terry Tremmel, of Norwalk. “We’ll take him out here once, twice a day since the gravel roads are muddy, but otherwise he gets, he gets a lot of walking.”
