CARROLL, Iowa — The blizzard that swept across western Iowa on Wednesday left piles of snow in road ditches, parking lots, and downtown Carroll.
According to the Carroll County Engineer’s Office, crews are working 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. to cover the 1,100 miles of roads in the county. They have 24 units which can move the snow in places like Carroll, Coon Rapids, or Glidden.
Carroll city crews also worked to plow this city’s streets on Wednesday.
“We came in at midnight, we normally start at 4 a.m. and then we, so we did that until about 9:30 10 o’clock on our arterial roads, and then we did our regular routes after that,” said Dale Pottebaum, the Carroll Streets Supt. “Basically, we got everything open now, but it went really slow because the snow was very heavy and very wet so it was not easy to push and then with a 50 to 60 mph winds with it, everything that we pushed was filling back in as we were going.”
The crews moved snow into big piles around town, normally they would get to work after the snow to move those piles to another location. But, that did not happen Thursday, as crews are bracing for yet more snow to fall.
Across town, residents were using scoops, snow blowers, and skid steer loaders to clear the snow.
“I don’t like running the snowblower because it’s so big,” said Alicia Neal, a Carroll Resident. “I attempted to shovel yesterday, I gave up halfway through and I have somebody actually coming to help me today to shovel the rest since it’s supposed to snow more tonight.”
People who live in Carroll are accustomed to getting wild weather once in a while.
“I keep telling everybody you know you want warm weather early you’re gonna pay for it later,” said Neal. “It’s hit or miss actually, hit or miss, it’s either we get dumped on or we don’t get any.”
For the crews which clear streets, there is a measure of appreciation for what they do.
“Getting all these people out, you get a lot of people that say thank you and appreciate what we’re doing, that’s nice,” said Pottebaum.
