MARSHALL COUNTY, Iowa — The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man who died after his semi veered off a highway on Tuesday.

At around 2:28 p.m. the sheriff’s office responded to a report of a semi that had veered off Highway 330, had gone through a guardrail down an embankment and then landed in the eastbound lanes of Highway 30. According to the sheriff’s office, when deputies arrived at the scene they found the semi on fire and the driver still inside. Deputies and bystanders used fire extinguishers to try and control the flames until firefighters arrived.

The driver was removed from the semi, but despite lifesaving measures he died from his injuries at the scene. On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office identified the driver as 69-year-old Richard James Wenger of Fairbank.

During the crash, agriculture equipment that the semi was hauling was dislodged and came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 under the Highway 330 bridge. The road was blocked for over three hours while first responders cleared the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol is continuing the investigation into the crash.
