MARSHALL COUNTY, Iowa — A driver was killed after his semi veered off a Marshall County highway on Tuesday afternoon.

At around 2:28 p.m. deputies with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash near Highway 330 and Highway 30. According to the sheriff’s office, the semi was traveling northbound on Highway 330 when it veered off the road, went through a guardrail and down an embankment into the eastbound lanes of Highway 30.

When deputies arrived at the scene they found the semi on fire, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies, as well as bystanders, used fire extinguishers to try to control the fire until firefighters could arrive at the scene and rescue the driver.

Despite lifesaving measures, the driver of the semi died from his injuries at the scene. His name has not been released.

The sheriff’s office said that the semi and the agriculture equipment it was hauling blocked the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 under the Highway 330 bridge. The eastbound lanes of Highway 30 were closed for over three hours while first responders worked to clear the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash.
