DES MOINES, Iowa — Bodycam video from officers involved in the deadly January 24th shooting of Brandon Mitchell, 36, has been released by the Des Moines Police Department.

Officers were at the home in the 1300 block of E. Tiffin Avenue after receiving a call from a neighbor around 2:40 p.m. that Mitchell may be at the residence. Police said the neighbor reported being fearful for the female resident’s safety because Mitchell had broken into the home earlier that month and threatened to kill her.

Sgt. Paul Parizek said Mitchell had active felony warrants for domestic violence, child endangerment, and probation violation. He also had violent tendencies and was known to go armed.

The summary video of the incident, provided Monday, contains footage and still images of the officers entering the home with a K-9 and calling for Mitchell to make himself known to police. Sgt. Parizek explained that after clearing the lower levels of the residence, the K-9 and officers went upstairs while continuing to announce that Mitchell should make himself known.

The K-9 indicated someone was in the closet and an officer searched the closet and spotted Mitchell after moving a picture frame.

Mitchell tells police not to touch him and that he has a gun multiple times. As the officers back away from the closet, they tell him to show his hands. After a loud crashing sound is heard, which Sgt. Parizek said officers perceived as gunfire, one officer fired five times. The other officer fired six shots after seeing Mitchell crouched down in the closet with an arm pointed at him in an aiming motion.

The officers order Mitchell to come to them so they can provide first aid and he refuses, instead responding with profanities, Sgt. Parizek said. The officers request a ballistic shield so they can approach Mitchell and as soon as it is provided, they move Mitchell out of the closet and begin giving medical aid. No gun was found on Mitchell or in the closet.

Medics from the Des Moines Fire Department arrived a short time later and took over care and transported Mitchell to the hospital where he died.

Sgt. Parizek said during the investigation it was determined the loud crashing sound in the closet was glass in a picture frame breaking.

The female resident told agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation that Mitchell had threatened on multiple occasions to kill her and make the police kill him.

The female resident also encouraged Mitchell, before police entered the home, to surrender and he replied, “They’re going to have to shoot me. I’m not going back to prison.”

Both the Polk County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office have determined the officers involved were legally justified in their use of deadly force in the shooting.

The officers who fired their weapons in the incident, Senior Police Officer William Perez and Senior Police Officer Michael Hoopes, are on administrative assignment as is policy following an on-duty significant critical or traumatic incident.

A Critical Review Committee will be convened by the DMPD as part of the official administrative review process.
