DES MOINES, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill which ends gender identity protections under the civil rights code into law on Friday.
The bill, HSB 242, SF 418, removes gender identity as a protected class, meaning protections from discrimination in employment, housing, wages, etc. are now removed.
The bill moved quickly, passing through just a week after it was introduced. During this time, large crowds of protestors gathered at the Iowa State Capital.
The bill passed through the House on a 60-36 vote and the Senate on a 33-15 vote on Thursday afternoon.
Governor Reynolds signed the bill into law on Friday afternoon. Following the signing, Reynolds release a written statement and video.
Iowa is the first state in the nation to rescind civil rights protections from an entire protected class.
