DES MOINES, Iowa — Two baby girls were surrendered to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services under the Safe Haven Law in February.
A baby girl born on February 8 and a baby girl born on February 12 will both be placed with foster families until a permanent placement is determined, according to the Iowa HHS.
These are the first two babies surrendered in 2025. This brings the overall total to 76 infants surrendered since the law was put into effect more than two decades ago. A total of eight infants were surrendered in 2024, according to the Iowa HHS.
The Iowa Safe Haven Act is an option for parents who determine they cannot care for an infant up to 90 days old. Designated safe haven’s locations include hospitals, police and fire stations.
