Jewish Federation condemns Nazi costume at Clive bar, Drake coach dismissed

CLIVE, Iowa — A Drake University volunteer hockey club coach was dismissed, and a Clive bar is facing backlash after images surfaced of a man dressed as a Nazi in a bar on Halloween night.

The incident reportedly took place inside Miss Kitty’s Country Bar, located in Clive. Images show a man dressed in a Nazi soldier uniform embellished with a swastika and wearing a cropped mustache. Several photos have been posted online that show the man raising his arm in an alleged Nazi salute.

During the course of the night, a photo was taken that pictures the man dressed in a Nazi uniform posing with two women.

One of the women in the photo has been identified as Jessie Rudin, who served as a volunteer coach for the Drake Hockey Club. Following the incident, Drake University announced Sunday Rudin had been dismissed and released the following statement.

“Effective immediately, the volunteer coach of the Drake Hockey Club has been dismissed. Drake University unequivocally condemns all forms of hate speech and discriminatory symbolism. Such behavior stands in direct opposition to our values of respect, inclusion, and integrity, and it has no place within our community.“

Following the incident, people have shared the photos and video on Facebook social groups demanding the bar address why the man was let in and allowed to stay.

Prior to Miss Kitty’s Facebook page being taken down, a post was made from the bar’s account, saying, “Ok. I’m gonna address this whole Nazi thing. as the owner was not aware he was in the building till someone came up and said something. Mind you it was extremely busy at the time. After finding the guy I did ask him to leave. He left with no problems. We do not support Natzis and never will. We are sorry if his costume offended anyone during his very brief time in the building.”

Sunday afternoon, the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines released a statement regarding the incident.

“The Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines is deeply disturbed that a bar patron in our community wore a Hitler costume on Halloween. Hitler is not a costume. This is not satire, it is antisemitism. Free speech is not a shield for minimizing hate. We expect our community’s businesses and institutions to reject antisemitism clearly and immediately.”

The Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines also shared an email with the community saying, “Central Iowa’s Jewish community expects our neighbors to reject hate clearly and consistently. We call on Iowans to stand with us in rejecting antisemitism and the trivialization of the Holocaust.”
