Home unlivable, two firefighters injured during Le Mars house fire

LE MARS, Iowa — Le Mars Fire & Rescue says two firefighters were injured while fighting a house fire in southwest Le Mars Saturday afternoon.

The Le Mars Fire-Rescue Department says crews were called to the 3300 block of Sadona Hills South around 6:43 p.m. Saturday on reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found the west side of the home engulfed in flames and smoke.

The Le Mars FD says crews began a defensive attack in the back of the residence as the fire was spreading to the roofline of the home and covered the back deck. Firefighters knocked down the flames and made entry into the home, but were forced back outside when the main floor flashed over.

Authorities say fire crews then fought the flames through windows and were able to again slow the fire and make a second entry. By initialing an aggressive interior attack, firefighters were able to get control of the flames.

The Le Mars FD says two firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. One firefighter sustained back injuries while the other fell partially through the floor. Both firefighters were treated at the scene and authorities say they are okay.

Authorities say the homeowners, Bryce and Janelle Raveling, were not home at the time. No other injures have been reported. A dog and a cat were able to escape unharmed.

The Le Mars FD says the fire originated in the master bedroom and the cause is believed to be lithium batteries that exploded while charging.

Fire crews had to ventilate and overhaul the entire home. Authorities say the main floor and it’s contents are a possible total loss, and the home has been marked as unlivable. Le Mars FD crews were on scene just under four hours.
