CRESTON, Iowa — A Creston man has been charged with kidnapping after police say a juvenile jumped out of his moving vehicle following a failed online marketplace sale.
According to the Creston Police Department, at around 10:32 p.m. Wednesday night officers with the police department as well as deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported robbery and assault.
The police department said that a deputy found a juvenile, who was injured and distressed, in the road near the intersection of South Sumner Street and Jefferson Avenue. According to court records, the victim had jumped out of a moving vehicle after the driver assaulted her.
Law enforcement learned that the victim had posted an item for sale on social media and that the driver, identified as 21-year-old Jayden Peavler, offered to buy the item. Court records state that Peavler picked up the victim in his vehicle to conduct the sale. However, court records say that Peavler tried to forcibly take the item.
Creston police says the victim tried calling 911, but Peavler assaulted the victim and then sped up when the victim tried to leave the car. The victim eventually managed to jump out of the moving vehicle. Police said the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
On Thursday morning, the Creston Police Department said Peavler was arrested and charged with the following:
- First-Degree Kidnapping
- First-Degree Robbery
- Assault While Participating in a Felony
- Obstruction of 911 Communication
- Interference with Official Acts
According to court records, Peavler is being held at the Union County Jail on a $530,000 cash-only bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for November 7.
