Des Moines police chase ends in PIT maneuver, arrest

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says a hit-and-run turned into a police chase through Des Moines which ended with a PIT maneuver.

Des Moines police say officers were called to the 3500 block of E. Douglas Avenue on reports of a hit-and-run shortly after 3 p.m. Police say that during the investigation, authorities located the suspect in a nearby parking lot.

The suspect fled the parking lot but was later spotted parked in the 2900 lock of E. Madison Avenue by a patrolling officer. The suspect fled authorities again and a pursuit was initiated.

The suspect was stopped in the 1700 block of E. Euclid Avenue by officers performing a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver. Authorities say the suspect then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody by DMPD officers.

The DMPD says the suspect, a 42-year-old male, has been taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

According to the DMPD, the Traffic Unit is investigating potential driver impairment.

Additional information will be shared as it becomes available for release, according to the DMPD.
