Adult, child from Des Moines die after being hit by vehicle along I-880 in Pottawattamie County

POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, Iowa — An adult and a child from Des Moines died after being struck by a vehicle while standing outside of their car on Interstate 880 in Pottawattamie County over the weekend.

On Sunday at around 7:03 p.m. emergency crews responded to a report of a crash involving a Chevrolet pickup truck and two pedestrians. According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, the pickup truck was traveling eastbound on I-880 around the 8.6-mile marker and swerved out of the roadway when it came up on another vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the road after crashing into a deer. The crash report states that the pickup truck swerved away from the vehicle and struck two people before coming to rest in the median.

The pedestrians, identified as 27-year-old Til Baswa and a two-year-old, both from Des Moines, died from their injuries at the scene. Both Baswa and the child were passengers in the vehicle that had hit the deer and were standing outside of the vehicle.

No other injuries were reported.
