DES MOINES, Iowa — The shutdown of the federal government is wrapping up day 21, with the 11th attempt to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government failing on Monday.
Senate Democrats are still calling for a plan that extends affordable health care tax credits, not wanting to pass the appropriation bill to fund the government until there is an agreement on that front. Governor Kim Reynolds (R) addressed the government shutdown in a press conference on Tuesday morning.
“First of all, if the Democrats would pass a clean C.R., we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. They need to come to the table and they need to pass a clean continuing resolution and continue as C.R. I think when under President Biden, this number might be off. But I think 13 different times, Republicans voted for a clean C.R. to move the government forward, to continue to have the conversations,” said Governor Reynolds. “So the game that they’re playing at the expense of Iowans and families of low income that need those resources are sad. It’s a sad scenario, they have nothing else. They need to come to the table and they need to get this passed.”
There are 700 employees with the Iowa National Guard that will not receive their regular paycheck until the shutdown is ended and an appropriation is passed. Those are specifically federal technicians, according to the Iowa National Guard. Those employees will receive backpay when the shutdown ends.
Sixty-seven federally paid staff members for Iowa Workforce Development were placed on furlough on Monday. The majority of the workers will be rolled back to working two days a week, according to IWD. There is no expected change to the ability of IWD to process unemployment claims, issue payments and answer customer questions.
Some local union leaders have sent letters to the Governor’s Office asking for the state to use state emergency aid to help those not getting paid during the shutdown. WHO 13 News asked Governor Reynolds if she plans on using state emergency aid to fill the paycheck void.
“We’ll just have to see what happens afterwards,” said Reynolds. “Sometimes they do backpay, sometimes they don’t if they’re furloughed or not working. I don’t know, we’ll have to see what they end up doing at the federal level. But again, if they would pass a clean C.R. then they could sit down at the table and then they could start to work on the different appropriations and get the government funded.”
