Runnells man sentenced for 2024 murder of cousin

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Runnells man was sentenced to prison on Tuesday for fatally shooting his cousin in 2024.

During the early morning hours of June 14, 2024, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in the 4500 block of SE 116th Street, north of Runnells. When first responders arrived, they found a man, later identified as 50-year-old Richard David Selby, inside a home dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

Several hours after the shooting was reported, the sheriff’s office said the shooting suspect’s vehicle, a GMC Sierra Denali, was spotted in Des Moines. Officers with the Des Moines Police Department managed to stop the vehicle and take the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Jacob Harbold, into custody. Authorities say that Harbold was discovered with a .30 caliber handgun that matched the shell casings that were found in the home.

According to the Polk County Attorney’s Office, Harbold and Selby were cousins and in early 2024 Harbold had moved into Selby’s home. Selby’s family said during their victim impact statements that Selby had helped Harbold get back onto his feet after serving time in jail, the attorney’s office said. In 2017, court records say Harbold was convicted of second-degree theft.

Initially, Harbold was charged with first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm; but in early October, he pled guilty to just second-degree murder. On Tuesday, a Polk County judge sentenced Harbold to a maximum of 50 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of 35 years. Harbold was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to the victim’s estate.
