One dead after truck crashes into ditch on Highway 65

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — One person has died following a single-vehicle accident early Monday morning on Highway 65 in Polk County.

A news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to southbound Highway 65 at NE 112th Street at 4:22 a.m. on a report of a pickup truck that had veered into a ditch and there was a fire underneath the truck.

The PCSO said witnesses were able to get the only occupant of the truck, an unconscious man, out of the vehicle. Life-saving measures were performed by deputies as well as fire and rescue units from Mitchellville and Bondurant. The accident victim was transported by air ambulance to a Des Moines metro hospital, where he died.

Firefighters put out the vehicle fire, and the PCSO said both lanes of Highway 65 are reopened to traffic.

Officials have not released the name of the man who died.

The investigation into what caused the crash continues.
