Dozens of IWD employees furloughed due to government shutdown

DES MOINES, Iowa — Over 60 employees from Iowa Workforce Development have been furloughed due to the federal government shutdown.

The IWD confirmed that roughly 67 federally paid workers from the agency’s Unemployment Insurance and Labor Market Information Divisions were furloughed on Monday. According to the IWD, most of the workers will be reduced to just working two days a week, while some won’t work at all, until the shutdown ends.

The IWD released a statement to WHO 13 about the furlough, which says in part:

The majority of IWD’s affected employees work outside of the bureau that directly handles unemployment claims. IWD does not expect there to be any impact on our ability to process claims, issue payment, or respond to customer questions, and we remain committed to maintaining critical services that Iowans need. Fall traditionally is a slow period for unemployment claims in Iowa. With good weather continuing to allow for work outdoors, we would expect the number of claims to remain low for the time being.

Remaining staff will continue to focus on essential duties in their departments to ensure uninterrupted support for claimants and employers. Some ancillary operations impacted by the furloughs, such as the release of labor market data, may be delayed until the shutdown ends.

On Friday, the federal government shutdown became the third longest shutdown in U.S. history. As the shutdown entered into its third week, states sounded the alarm over dwindling funding for SNAP, while concerns were also raised about whether government employees and military service members would receive a full paycheck in the coming days if the shutdown continues.
