MARSHALL COUNTY, Iowa — A Des Moines man officials said placed hidden cameras in portable toilets at a Des Moines park and at a cross-country event in Marshall County, is facing nearly 90 new charges in one of the cases.
On Thursday morning, the Des Moines Police Department announced Tyler Pavlick, 32, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with seven counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and three counts of invasion of privacy. The charges are connected to a camera discovered in a portable toilet on October 4th at Water Works Park, during the Harvest & Handmade Fair.
Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for DMPD, stated that the camera was positioned in the bowl of the toilet, angled to capture the faces of individuals entering the porta-potty, as well as to monitor their use of the toilet.
Dozens of victims, adults and children, were captured on video using the porta-potty. DMPD is working to identify more of the victims and asking anyone who used the portable toilet at the event to contact them at fcs@dmgov.org.
On Thursday afternoon, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office announced it was investigating Pavlick for a similar incident involving a camera placed in a porta-potty at a September 23rd cross-country meet at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center. The meet hosted male and female teams between 7th and 12th grades.
Online court records now show Pavlick has been charged with 88 counts connected to the cross-country meet. He is charged with 35 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor-cause to engage in act, one count of sexual exploitation of a minor-promote film, and 52 counts of invasion of privacy.
Criminal complaints filed against Pavlick state he installed the camera at 3:39 p.m. before the cross-country races began and then left the scene. The camera was removed by witnesses at 4:40 p.m. and they reported the incident to the State Center Police Department, which was supervising the event.
The complaint said videos of minor children and adults “in states of nudity that include standard ways a person utilizes the restroom” were recovered from the camera’s MicroSD card.
School officials were notified immediately, and interviews were conducted with potential witnesses. Potential surveillance video was also secured that may have captured the person involved.
During the investigation, the MCSO said a partial image of the person and the vehicle of interest was developed, and the information was shared with law enforcement across the state to assist with identification and determine whether any similar cases had been reported.
DMPD reached out to the MCSO on October 6th to inform them they were investigating a similar incident that detectives believed had been committed by the same person.
Results from the digital evidence gathered in both cases led investigators to identify Pavlick as the suspect on October 14th. The following day, search warrants were executed at Pavlick’s apartment in Des Moines’ East Village, and he was arrested on the charges linked to the Water Works Park case.
The MCSO is also trying to identify all the victims in the case. Anyone who used the portable toilet near the starting line between 3:30-4:40 p.m. on the day of the cross-country meet is asked to contact them using the online crime tip link: Submit a Crime Tip to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.
Pavlick is being held in the Polk County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond in the Des Moines case. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 27th.
Online court records do not yet list any hearing information on the Marshall County charges.
