Arnolds Park Amusement Park sees record attendance

ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa (KCAU) — Arnolds Park Amusement Park has closed for the season, but this one was one for the record books.

Arnolds Park Amusement Park is empty now. The rides have shut down. The famous Nutty Bar stand is closed. But that wasn’t the case this summer when the park experienced one of its best seasons ever.

“Our attendance this summer was incredible, especially the weekends. And we had over 300,000 visitors throughout the summer, and usually what that means is that they also come back maybe two, three times on top of that,” said Chris Swanson with Arnolds Park Amusement Park. “So, we had unique visits of over 700,000 for the summer.”

According to Swanson, it trailed only the Iowa State Fair as the number one attraction in the state. “I think, you know, the flood the year before really got people to stay home a little more, and they just needed to get out this summer, and I think that’s one of the big things,” said Swanson. “Plus, we added quite a few new things at the Park this summer.”

Some of those new attractions were The Drop Spin Tower, electric go-karts, and bumper cars. The Park also had premium concerts that brought in visitors like bands Foreigner, The Wallflowers, and Collective Soul.

According to Swanson, those visitors contributed nearly $30 million in regional economic activity.

“Not only for the park, but for the whole economics for the region,” said Swanson. “People come to get hotels and go out to eat.”

Even though the season is over, work isn’t done at the Park. They need to start getting ready for next year.

The carts from the roller coaster are sent to Philadelphia for inspection and cleaning, and the rest of the rides also get a thorough inspection from park personnel.

“The maintenance team in the park are taking the rides apart,” Swanson said. “We put them in the maintenance shop, and they go through them every winter. We wrap up some of the rides. A lot of TLC goes on during this wintertime.”

Now the park isn’t completely closed for the season. You can still take rides on the Queen II every Saturday and Sunday until November 1.
