HUMBOLDT, Iowa –The parents of a student who was sexually abused by a former Humboldt middle school teacher have filed a lawsuit against the school district for allegedly knowing of and concealing the abuse.

Samantha Meyer-Davis, at the time a Humboldt middle school teacher, was arrested for sexually abusing a student in 2023. Meyer-Davis later received federal charges related to the assaults. Court records state that between May 2022 and November 2023 Meyers assaulted a student who was 14-years-old at the time.

After several months at trial, Meyer-Davis pled guilty to sexually exploiting a student in May 2025. On October 6, Meyers was sentenced to 20 years in prison with a five year supervised release and was ordered to pay $13,000 in restitution.

According to court records, the parents of the student filed a suit on Tuesday alleging the Humboldt Community School District knew of the abuse and made efforts to conceal it from the public and parents. In the complaint, the parents say the school district “prioritized avoiding bad publicity over their students’ safety.”

Court documents state that around the fall of 2022, the district was provided evidence of the sexual abuse and did not take actions to contact authorities or the parents. Court documents also state that around this time the school district allegedly met with the parents but dismissed the abuse and reportedly met with the student several times without informing the parents.

According to the court documents, the parents are seeking damages from the school district on the grounds of negligence, negligent supervision, and inflicting emotional distress.
