Gov. Reynolds sets date for special election following Sen. Celsi’s death

DES MOINES, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds announced the date for a special election following the death of Senator Claire Celsi.

Gov. Reynolds announced Wednesday that a special election for the now vacant Iowa Senate District 16 seat would take place on December 30, 2025.

The seat was formerly held by Sen. Claire Celsi, a Democrat, who was elected to the seat in 2018. Celsi, 56, died on October 6, a few weeks after entering hospice care.

Iowa Senate District 16 composes parts of Polk and Dallas counties, which includes the larger cities of West Des Moines, Clive and Windsor Heights.
