DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says a 13-year-old is in custody following the theft of an Amazon delivery van on Wednesday and a chase that ended in a crash.
DMPD’s Public Information Officer, Sgt. Paul Parizek said the van was reported stolen just before 4:45 p.m. from the 600 block of Walker Street. The van was spotted by officers near SE 14th Street and Parke Avenue a little over 45 minutes later. Officers tried to stop it, but the van took off.
The van crashed into a pickup truck two minutes later on SE 14th Street and the railroad viaduct, according to Sgt. Parizek. Two occupants of the van fled, but police took them into custody quickly.
Police have linked the 13-year-old driver of the stolen van to another vehicle theft that happened on October 7th. They’ve been referred to juvenile court on charges of first-degree theft, second-degree theft, and eluding.
The passenger of the stolen van was not charged in the incident.
DMPD’s investigation into the case continues.
