Altoona man charged after series of assaults at store, police say

ALTOONA, Iowa — An Altoona man has been charged after police say he assaulted several people at a store last week.

According to the Altoona Police Department, on October 3 and on October 4 the department received reports of alleged assaults that had occurred at a store in the 3400 block of 8th Street SW. Police said that two female victims reported that a man had approached them claiming they had stains on their clothing. The victims then reported the man offered to help them remove the stains and then, despite declining the man’s help, he touched them inappropriately, police said.

Shortly after one of the reports, the APD says officers were able to locate the suspect — 23-year-old Amado Chavez-Aguilar. He was booked into the Polk County Jail on two counts of assault.

The APD said that a third victim came forward on Wednesday and reported that a similar assault had occurred during the same time frame as the previous reports. Chavez-Aguilar was released from jail on October 4, but the APD says a warrant for an additional assault charge and a theft charge have been requested.

Court records show that Chavez-Aguilar was also charged with assault in September for allegedly inappropriately touching a victim without their consent at an Ankeny store located in the 2100 block of SE Delaware Avenue.

The APD is encouraging anyone who may be a victim of assault or has a loved one who may be a victim to reach out to the department or another local law enforcement agency. Victims can also reach out to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) for support.
